SINGING NINA

The Life and Music of Nina Simone

With Karen Underwood and Live Band

‘Singing Nina’ is the fabulous new show brought to you by the Chicago Jazz Queen, Karen Underwood and her band. Karen brings to you in narration and song the engrossing life story of the great legend Nina Simone, from her struggle against racism and exile from her homeland to her flamboyant, troubled relationships and poignant later years.

Karen sings all the classic Nina songs, ‘Missippi Goddamn’, ‘Sinnerman’, ‘My Baby’ and ‘I Need a Little Sugar In My Bowl’ supported by a live band of featuring on piano Erik Gullikson, guitar Eoghan Regan, bass Peter Hennigan and drums Bob Jackson.

Nina Simone the civil rights singer, a lot of us are familiar with, but the transformation Eunice Kathleen Waymon the poor southern daughter to Nina Simone the acclaimed performer, mother, and lover many of us are less familiar. With music and narration Karen and band trace the evolution of a musical legend.

Cork Opera House, through the generous support of the Arts Council of Ireland, is honoured to present the Irish Premiere of Piazzola’s Tango Opera Maria de Buenos Aires as part of this summers Cork Midsummer Festival. Under the skilful direction of Conor Hanratty, we have brought together an international company of musicians, actors and dancers to create this unique and imaginative version of Piazzola’s masterpiece.
Maria de Buenos Aires tells the story of Maria, a mythical girl from the slums who falls into the rhythm of the city’s underworld. Seduced and corrupted, her demise is watched over by thieves and brothel keepers, before her shadow is reborn to wander the streets of Buenos Aires.
In this powerful vision, the Cork Opera House stage will be transformed into a waterfront bar brimming with tango dancers, escorts, waiters and entertainers all moving to the passionate beat of the tango.
