Cork Opera House throws open its door and rips its seats out (how very rock and roll) this Saturday 21st April at 8pm for the ultimate of rock fests with some of the finest of Corks upcoming and renowned bands storming the stage for a ‘rock-tastic’ standing gig. With Oxygen not happening this summer, Cork Rocks is determined to fill that rock void delivering 9 bands of superior talent to the Opera House stage just without the mud and wellies.

Cork Rocks is a series of events which has been happening over the course of the last number of months and continues to deliver the goods in each venue it visits. The brain child of Stephen Manning, one of Cork Opera House’s own talented stage technicians, Cork Rocks The House is a natural step to be taken by this entrepreneurial ‘techie’. After years of working on the music scene in Cork and further afield, Stephen has worked with some of the finest acts nationally and internationally. Cork Rocks the House sees his vision of Cork being a hub for musical expression come to life with the musical prowess of 9 different original bands rocking the stage where the legend that was Rory Gallagher played in 1987. These upcoming bands are ready to make the same musical journey as this Irish legend, starting with the mother of all stages in Cork, Cork Opera House.

The roof is sure to raised on this night with complete original sets being played by the likes of Slow Motion Heroes, Jodavino, Time Is A Thief, Rob the Nation, and many many more. Get your tickets now for the ultimate event in your music calendar.

Notes on the bands:

Slow Motion Heroes
Initially formed by various members of some of Cork’s heaviest rock bands, Slow Motion Heroes have turned expectations around with their unique blend of infectious, soaring melodies and driving punk-pop, while still touching their caps to their hardcore roots.

Jodavino
Since forming in 2005, Jodavino have been winning fans through their live gigs both at home and in Europe ever since. Muscially, they were once described by Hotpress as “Tori Amos meets Fiona Apple with a touch of Coldplay thrown in for good measure”, although this doesn’t take into account their high-energy live performances.

Time Is A Thief
With a self-proclaimed agenda to “always been to play loud, fast and intense music, but above all give people a great show”, Time Is A Thief are one of the most exciting live acts around, with their full-on, no-nonsense rock sound.

Rob The Nation
Fresh from rocking out on BalconyTV Cork last Valentine’s Day, young up and comers RTN are turning heads, with their accomplished live mix of covers and their own. superbly crafted originals

The Billy Kennedy Band
Both an established favourite, and a mentor to new Cork musicians, Billy Kennedy has been a key figure on the Cork circuit since he returned home after his music journey took him to London and Dublin. He hosted the long running open mic night in Charlies Bar and has supported Christy Hennessey, Mundy and Jimmy McCarthy among others.

Dimitry Datus

Dimitry Datus play an original set of uncluttered alternative rock, and their aim is to be ‘a bit different from all the other bands in the village’. Fancy effects pedals and sythesised sounds are not for this trio who eye their single distortion pedal with the kind of suspicion normally reserved for door to door trouser salesmen.

The David Nelligan Thing
An independent musician/songwriter based in Cork, David Nelligan has released two self-recorded albums on torrent site Mininova, Junk From a Past Life and Everything Matters which have been downloaded 30,000+ times (and counting). The David Nelligan Thing sees him backed up by some talented local musicians, and have built up a devoted live following.

Tomas McCarthy and Eric Doherty
Two different musicians, brought together especially for this event! Tomas McCarthy, and raised on soul and blues, with such influences as Rory Gallagher, Stevie Wonder, Bob Marley, Rodrigo y Gabriela, Bob Dylan and many more. Tomas fashioned his own style of playing with a wide variety of many different styles ranging from spanish, classical, blues, reggae, rock and country. Joined on stage by Eric Doherty of the Wall Street Thieves, a band known for their command of a variety of styles, a lyrical sincere directness, and a melodic grasp that has universal appeal.

Jack O Rourke
A unique singer, pianist and composer, who has played the Cork circuit since studying Music in U.C.C.. Jack has played and sang with artists as diverse as Bobby Lee, Luka Bloom and Annette Buckley. Piano based, Jack's music is a mixture of folk, rock, jazz, blues and chamber music.
