Quiet Lights presents Iarla O Lionard & Steve Cooney, Marlene Enright & Aoife Blake
Sunday 6th December 2020
Quiet Lights, an exciting festival which aims to shine a light on the new wave of Irish and International folk, traditional, and experimental talent that are quietly forging new paths - showcases some shining lights of the Irish music scene. This special concert features the unique partnership of Iarla Ó Lionáird and Steve Cooney while Cork singer-songwriter Marlene Enright and Cork-based harpist, singer and fiddle player Aoife Blake complete this stellar line up.
Iarla Ó Lionáird & Steve Cooney
Iarla and Steve have forged a unique musical partnership over many years and now look forward to a series of concerts together in 2020. Their interpretations of songs from the sean-nós tradition have set a new standard of artistic integrity and creative innovation within the traditional structures of the Gaelic song tradition.
They have explored their own individual paths in their careers – Iarla performing with such renowned groups as the Afro Celt Sound System and the Gloaming as well as his collaborations with classical ensembles, opera and film performances, Steve performing in many Irish traditional instrumental ensembles and contributing to more than 250 CDs as a guitarist, bass player and producer.
They have long shared an empathetic link that has grown out of their love of the melodic and poetic art forms created during the time when Gaelic culture was in its full flowering. Iarla grew up immersed in this culture in Cúil Aodha in County Cork while Steve grew up in Australia and brings an imaginative perspective to the accompaniment of the songs, based on the traditions of the harpers.
Marlene Enright captured the attention of Irish media in 2017 with the release of her debut record, Placemats and Second Cuts. In early 2018, the album was nominated for the RTE Choice Music Prize award alongside James Vincent McMorrow, Fionn Regan and Talos.
She returned with a four track EP entitled Petrichor at the start of 2020. Petrichor is the earthy scent produced when rain falls on dry soil - a nod to the idea that creativity was abound again.
"I wanted to create an EP where the bare bones of the song, the lyrics and melody, stood to the fore, ahead of any other production element and add what I felt was necessary using instrumentation that I had not used in my last album or using an instrument that would play an unexpected role in the song." Cormac McCarthy arranged three of the four songs for trombone, clarinets and saxophones, played by Paul Dunlea and Matthew Berrill. Traditional Irish artist, Donal Lunny, features on Bouzouki with Gary Keane (Stephanie Rainey) on drums. The EP was recorded in multiple locations in Cork with William Lucey (Rubyhorse, LeftBank) and Brian Casey (Wavefield Recording Studios), mastered by Fergal Davis.
Aoife Blake is a harper-singer-fiddle player from Co. Galway, based in Cork. Although rooted in Irish traditional music, she takes influence from other folk traditions, especially Appalachian old-time and Scottish music. She released her debut album, The Green Hills, in February of this year, a culmination of her recent years of exploring the harp in particular, how it fits in and stands out in various ensemble settings. Her playing and arrangements for harp, voice and ensemble reflect her love for the purely traditional, as well as more contemporary sounds.
Tickets for the stream will be available exclusively via Dice.FM.
