Poor Things – 68th Cork International Film Festival Opening Gala

Book

Duration: 141 minutes

Director: Yorgos Lanthimos
Producer: Ed Guiney, Andrew Lowe, Emma Stone, Yorgos Lanthimos
Screenwriter: Tony McNamara
Main Cast: Emma Stone, Willem Dafoe, Margaret Qualley, Mark Ruffalo, Jerrod Carmichael, Ramy Youssef
Cinematographer: Robbie Ryan

An incredible tale about the fantastical evolution of Bella Baxter (an outstanding and hilarious performance by Emma Stone), a sexually innocent young woman brought back to life by the brilliant and unorthodox scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter (whom she calls “God”), played by Willem Dafoe.

Kept a secret, Bella is eager to learn about and see more of the world around her, so she runs off with Duncan Wedderburn, a slick and debauched lawyer (exuberantly played by Mark Ruffalo), and travels across the continents. Free from the prejudices of her times, Bella demands equality and liberation.

Yorgos Lanthimos (The Favourite, CIFF2018) expands his gloriously bizarre vision without compromise, and what an extraordinary vision it is! Produced by Ireland’s own award-winning Element Pictures, the film is visually stunning on every level. Daring, edgy, laugh-out-loud shockingly funny, this is a wild, sometimes grotesque, completely bewitching, mono and technicolor riotous romp of a ride, from a master magician of cinema. FC

Winner: Golden Lion, Venice Film Festival 2023
